Split is an absolute powerhouse of shoegaze, dream-pop and total rock. It has plenty of diversity without veering into the Brit-pop consuming the bulk of their followup Lovelife, plus Emma and Miki know how to crank up those guitars to batshit noisy levels when the desire arises. There's a little more vocal presence than previous albums, where their sweet lilts and moody and sometimes angsty lyrics aren't as buried under guitar swills and reverb. Still, the dreamy shoegaze element is in full effect for the most part.
