Lane, Philip (1950-)

Description:

A collection of works by English composer and musicologist Philip Lane. He began composing at an early age, and his works have attracted attention since his student days, when they were performed by orchestras. He was also known as a scholar of the 14th Lord Berners (1883-1950), a well-known composer who supervised the recording of all of Lord Berners' works and eventually became a trustee of the Berners family fortune. He also reconstructed film music and was instrumental in restoring lost soundtracks. His own works, too, are all brilliant, with an emphasis on rich orchestral sound, and are still much loved today. This album includes some of his best-known works, including "London Salute," written for the BBC's 60th anniversary; "Distraction on a Melody of Paganini," originally written for brass quintet; "Cotswold Dances," reflecting his childhood memories; "Divertimento," quoting his own works; and the popular This is a 2001 performance by Gavin Sutherland, the veteran music director of the English National Ballet from 2008 to 2022.
