Description:

A memorable debut album released in 1972, featuring many songs covered by jazz giants and the killer song "Homey," a favorite in the rare groove scene! Although he emerged on the NYC jazz scene as Nina Simone's exclusive touring pianist, he was unable to flourish as a solo artist, so he took a leap of faith and produced "Liberated Brother" on his own. He gathered his trusted musicians and completed this album in only two days of rehearsal and five hours of recording, and it is an important work that has boosted his fame as a composer! The title track, "Liberated Brother," is a Latin instrumental covered by Horace Silver, Weldon's mentor. Mr. Clean," with its complex melody but memorable phrases, was covered by Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, and Peter Herbolzheimer.Sister Sanctified," a jazz funk with comical synth phrases, was covered by Stanley Valentine, whose version was sampled by Boogie Down Productions' "My Philosophy" and reappraised. The Blakestra also covered the song on their album "A Tribute to Brother Weldon," released in 2004 on Stones Throw after Weldon's death. And "Homey," a jazz-funk song with a strong blues flavor, is a super classic that was played heavily on the dance floor in the 1990s. The simple, groovy drums with few notes and Weldon's melodic melodica are cool and sophisticated, and it is no wonder it was so popular in the rare groove scene. This is a great opportunity to listen to the album that helped to recognize Weldon's talent as a songwriter.
