This album has a taste of everything that they were known for: drunken jams ("Hootenanny"), high-speed short songs and fun guitar solos ("Run It"), power pop that you can bop your head along to and sing along with ("Color Me Impressed")... and that's only within the first three songs on the album. "Mr. Whirly" and "Love Lines" are just pure fun. They experiment with the drum machine on "Within Your Reach" and Paul sings one of their best tunes. Hootenanny is on par with their next album, Let It Be, because both albums contain an eclectic range of songs that fully represent the spirit of The Replacements, stabilizing them as a strong contender for the title as the best band of the 1980's.
