The "Readerspiel," two stage songs by Herzogenberg, a well-known friend of Brahms, and Kreuk, who studied with Reinecke, were common in the first half of the 19th century, and were often written as "a combination of piano, song, and sometimes chorus," as in Brahms' "Love Song. Many composers loved this simple ensemble because of its ability to express the subtle nuances of the German language. Reichardt (1725-1841) is credited with establishing the form, and Herzogenberg's works continue this tradition. Krug was a choral conductor in Hamburg.
