The story takes place in Tokyo in the future, where the war has ended and the scars of war remain. The reigning figure is Inroku Umikatsu, a media tycoon who controls the communications infrastructure through his connections to the political and business worlds. With his vast amount of information and lucid mind, Umikatsu has solved numerous cases. However, there is more to Umikatsu's brilliant deductions than meets the eye. The "last great detective," Shinjuro Yuki, is the one who brilliantly reveals the real truth behind them. However, the public, unaware of this, calls Shinjuro a "defeated detective.
