Vesuvius and funicular. 1880. Painting in body colour, 35.5 x 54cm, on cartridge paper. Colour to edge of paper. Minor loss of top right corner and water stain along right edge; both would be hidden by a frame. From Johnson Lavis’s collection of 1880s; note on guard tissue in a contemporary hand dates the picture as 30^th Nov. 1880. Picture shows Vesuvius at night with the illuminated base building in the forground and the line of the first funicular receding towards the glowing summit. The funicular opened in 1880. In very good condition apart from minor faults noted.
