These beautiful sheepskins are from sheep raised on our neighbor’s farm here in Bridgewater, Vermont, by our friend Lynne Bertram.
They are from Southdown sheep, a breed originating in Southern England. As you will see, they have been professionally washed and tanned by Vermont Natural Tannery. This process is free from chemicals and accounts for their natural beauty being brought out to its best.
The Bridgewater Mill is a woolen mill because, during the 1840s, the surrounding hills in Bridgewater held 9,000 Merino sheep, which were introduced by William Jarvis from Spain in 1820. The original mill was built in 1825.
