Description:
Portuguese 18th century music reissued! Avondano's "Death of Abel"! Portuguese Music by Massimo Mazzeo & Divino Sospiro! World premiere recording of Pedro Antonio Avondano's "The Death of Abel"! The Portuguese-based Divino Sospiro ancient music orchestra, under the baton of Massimo Mazzeo, has been working to revive the works of Portuguese composers for some time now, and this album features the world premiere recording of "The Death of Abel" by Pedro Antonio Avondano. The composer featured on this album, Pedro Antonio Avondano (1714-1782), is one of them. Avondano was a descendant of a family of Italian musicians active in Lisbon in the 18th century. His composition "The Death of Abel" (c. 1780), based on a popular work by Pietro Metastasio, a well-known librettist also known for his numerous operatic works, has been recorded as having been performed some 40 times since the Baroque period. Avondano has used all the expressive possibilities of Baroque music in this tale of the first murder, portraying it as a frenetic drama. Recorded with a superb cast of singers, this album is a world premiere recording. Tokyo M-Plus
