Welcome to the Strategies for Confident & Ethical Public Speaking course. This program will equip you with the knowledge and capability required to speak with confidence, clarity and integrity in a wide range of public communication contexts. You will explore the historical foundations of public speaking, the influence of communication models on modern speaking practice, the techniques for managing anxiety, the strategies for preparing and delivering effective speeches and the ethical principles that underpin respectful, honest and inclusive public communication.
This course begins by examining why public speaking is an art, the evolution of human communication and the influences on public speaking today. You will explore the foundations of public speaking through Aristotle’s Rhetoric, Cicero’s five arts and the key guidelines for speaking effectively in public. This learning area also explains why public speaking is a life skill, how transferable skills extend across personal and professional contexts and how individuals become more confident speakers by managing speech anxiety, listening actively and adapting to diverse audiences.
The next learning area focuses on audience analysis, information quality and speech organisation. You will examine how to build credibility by adapting to different audiences, how to identify and use reliable information and how to organise ideas and information effectively. This section also explains how to present information clearly and confidently, how to speak effectively in common public communication contexts and how the models and elements of human communication influence the way messages are received and interpreted.
The next learning area explores the ethical responsibilities of today’s public speaker. You will analyse the key issues facing speakers, including the importance of ethics in public speaking, the sources of speech anxiety and the uncertainties associated with presenting. This section also examines strategies for building your confidence before your speech, managing anxiety as you develop your speech, planning and preparing your presentation early, choosing meaningful topics, becoming an expert on your subject and researching your audience to strengthen your impact.
The next learning area examines the preparation and rehearsal process in greater depth. You will explore how to practise your speech, why knowing your introduction and conclusion well enhances confidence and how to build your composure on the day of your presentation. This learning area also discusses how to manage anxiety during your delivery and what to do after presenting to reflect, learn and improve future public speaking performances.
The next learning area focuses on dialogic ethics in public speaking. You will examine how to facilitate a supportive communication climate, demonstrate mutual respect with audiences, promote honest communication, convey a positive attitude toward learning and accept the constructive role of conflict. This section also highlights how to provide effective feedback, how to recognise and avoid plagiarism and the essential principles of academic integrity that ensure intellectual honesty in all communication contexts.
The next learning area explores inclusive and ethical communication practices. You will analyse how to avoid ethnocentrism and sexism, how to maintain awareness of diverse perspectives and how to model equitable, respectful language choices in public settings. This section reinforces the importance of ethical conduct as a foundational expectation for all effective speakers.
The next learning area addresses listening as a critical component of public speaking competence. You will explore the HURIER listening model, the types of listening, how to listen effectively to speeches, how to block distractions, how to manage listening anxiety and how to focus on a speaker’s main points. This section strengthens your ability to engage in reciprocal communication and supports the development of stronger, more connected speaker-audience relationships.
By the end of this course you will understand how to prepare, deliver and evaluate ethical and effective speeches, how to manage anxiety and build confidence, how to apply communication models and ethical frameworks to diverse contexts and how to use strategic, inclusive and audience-focused communication to strengthen your impact as a public speaker.
