'The history of Campbelltown, S.A., makes fascinating reading.  Along the boundary river which fed some of the richest market gardens in South Australia, came a group of British and German settlers at about 1850 whose descendants are still there, only recently having sold the land cultivated by themselves and their forebears.  Not only is continuity a marked feature of this society, but also close kinship from intermarriages down the line of succession.  There cannot be many such social groups in Australian cities, standing where their ancestors stood, knowing who they are and where their dearest loyalties lie.

The story of a large Italian group in Campbelltown is interestingly told.  These later immigrants started coming during the Depression of the 1920's, and flooded in after the Second World War.  They, too, gave their energies to this most fruitful earth, and have prospered accordingly.  The Southern part of Campbelltown is of a somewhat different character from the riverland, with its early villages on main roads and its hundred years of suburban development.
