At the dawn of the Great Awakening, Whitefield was lampooned by the existing clergy as an enthusiast, a pretender, a money-grubber, and even a ladies' man. The most durable of the claims was that of the wild-eyed enthusiast. And it was nowhere more vocally stated than by the Bishop of London, Joseph Trapp's Pastoral Letter against Whitefield.

The present work is one of the very earliest works to come to his defense, specifically engaging Trapp's Letter, working meticulously through the letter and also Whitefield's doctrine, the emotional experiences of converts, even physican manifestations, and arguing that all this was, in fact, only surprising to many divines because it was the religion of the New Testament . . . and they were strangers to it as well. Very rare.
