Collagen peptides, also known as hydrolyzed collagen or collagen hydrolyzate, are a highly digestible protein produced from the connective tissue (skin and bones) of animals. It is produced by enzymatic treatment of ingredients rich in collagen. This processing leads to the breakdown of collagen proteins into smaller peptide molecules to make them better absorbed by the human body. As a result of enzymatic hydrolysis, the product loses its gelling effect and becomes soluble in water.

Peptides are characterized by a particularly high content of the amino acids proline, glycine and hydroxyproline, which constitute almost 50% of the total volume. Hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine (hydroxylated derivatives of amino acids) occur only in collagen protein and form particularly strong compounds with other amino acids. The resulting cells are collagen peptides with unique bioactive properties.
