A Wine Lover’s Guide to Venice.
Venetian history recalls a time when, after mass at St. Mark’s Basilica, churchgoers would retire to the bar in the piazza that lay in the shadow of the bell tower and sip wine, a second communion of sorts. Tables and chairs outside the bar moved around the square throughout the day, following the shadow of the bell tower. It became a common expression in Venetian “to meet someone in the shadow of the bell tower” for a glass of wine. And then, after time had passed, the glass of wine came to be known as the “shadow” or in Italian, the “ombra.”
Today, in Venice and throughout the Veneto, in osterie and wine bars, it is common for wine to be served in these small, unpretentious, stemless glasses with heavy bases for stability and a comfortable feel in the hand, inspired by the culture of Venice and throughout the Veneto region, where small glasses of wine are shared in bacaros with small plates of small plates that can be consumed in a bite or two.
