A wonderfully characterful mid century oil on board portrait painting depicting an elderly bearded man in a cap, titled “The Roadmender” and signed Wendy Wood lower right. The work has a loose, expressive painterly quality with strong impasto through the beard and face, giving it a distinctly Scottish modernist feel. Particularly appealing is the handwritten inscription verso which appears to identify the sitter as a flamboyant West Port / Grassmarket character who lived for years in Howard Place, Edinburgh, adding genuine local social history interest and provenance to the piece. The reverse note reads in part: “Wendy Wood. Flamboyant West Port character… lived for years in Howard Place Edinburgh…”

Wendy Wood (1892–1981) was a well known Scottish artist, writer and nationalist figure associated with Edinburgh’s artistic and cultural scene during the mid 20th century. Best remembered for her outspoken personality, activism and colourful public life, her paintings often focused on Scottish characters, landscapes and everyday life, giving works like this an added sense of authenticity and period atmosphere. Pieces connected to identifiable Edinburgh subjects are particularly appealing from both a decorative and historical perspective.

The painting is presented in its original period frame and has a very atmospheric, bohemian look that would sit beautifully in eclectic, maximalist or cottagecore interiors. A highly decorative and evocative Edinburgh character portrait with strong decorative appeal and unusual local historical interest.

Overall good vintage condition with age related wear to the frame and surface as shown. Frame measures approximately 29 x 37cm.
