Issued by the Republic of Austria in 1990, this 5 schilling commemorative stamp honors Mathias Zdarsky (1856–1940), regarded as the founder of alpine skiing. The design by G. Schmirl and M. Siegl portrays Zdarsky skiing through a snow-covered landscape with autumn-colored trees and mountains in the background. Zdarsky revolutionized skiing by developing the first alpine skiing techniques and organizing early ski races. The inscription “Begründer der alpinen Skifahrtechnik und des Torlaufes” (Founder of Alpine Ski Technique and Slalom) celebrates his pioneering contributions to winter sports.
