I rarely come across a small early 19th century theorem painting on velvet (usually they are larger) or one with a period gold mat, and for me it is the combination of scale and mat and frame together with the floral painting (with dogwood and bleeding hearts among those blooms) that makes this one a gem. I think it is of the sort to hang in a cozy corner next to a good reading chair--it feels very warm, and also a bit moody, and especially at home amid old leather bound books!

10 1/4" x 8 3/8" framed, as found, painting still attached to original wooden stretcher; mat and frame period if not original to it. Some fading/toning to the painting as is usually the case, c. 1830s or so.
