The Caribbean Scrawled Cowfish (Acanthostracion quadricornis) is a truly unique saltwater fish known for its boxy shape, horn-like protrusions above the eyes, and intricate maze-like patterning across its body. Its pale background is covered in dark, irregular lines that give it a hand-drawn, “scrawled” appearance, making it one of the most distinctive fish available in the hobby.
Native to Caribbean reefs and seagrass beds, the Scrawled Cowfish is a slow, deliberate swimmer that spends its time cruising the tank and picking at small food items. In the aquarium, it does best in peaceful setups with plenty of open space and minimal strong currents. Because of its calm nature and unusual swimming style, it should be housed with non-aggressive tankmates.
This species is not reef safe and is best kept in a Fish Only or Fish Only With Live Rock system. Like other cowfish and boxfish, it can release toxins if severely stressed, so stable water conditions, gentle handling, and compatible tankmates are essential for long-term success.
The Scrawled Cowfish readily accepts a varied diet that includes meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and enriched brine shrimp, along with sinking pellets. Regular feedings and a stress-free environment help keep this fish healthy and active.
