Majestic and aesthetically pleasing, this elephant sculpture was further polished on with carvings of floral Mughal designs. The base is of sheesham wood and the carvings are imbued with oyster to reflect a contrasting colour design. Decorated meticulously, the artistic design alludes to elephants beautified for ceremonies. Elephants used as rides, in conjunction with horses, during battles in earlier times are said to be a show of power and were oftentimes used to in still fear on battlefields. Elephants were loved by Mughal emperors and were beautified with ornaments and fabrics with ethnic artistry for cultural processions and festivities.

Considered by some as symbols of imperial authority and masculine virility, elephants strike an unique presence by their gigantic stature. It was said that the value of one good elephant is equal to that of five hundred horses. Akbar, being one of the popular Mughal emperors, highly valued elephants and he is seen often in paintings riding on his elephant Hawa’i which is said to be of furious nature.  In contrast, the elephants at festivities carried out majestic receptions and were that of a more welcoming and calm nature.
