The Church of Scotland parish of the North Isles of Shetland has been without a full-time minister for over four years; a fact that comes to the attention down in Australia of the Rev Lachlan Ness. Lachlan decides that here is a challenge fit for his particular talents, and lets it be known that he would be available in Shetland for a time, and would do his best to help the parish obtain a full-time minister. His offer is accepted. He and his wife Janet travel to Aberdeen, Scotland, from where they cross hundreds of kilometres of wild North Sea and arrive in Shetland in a snow storm in the early spring of 2008, unaware of the many adventures that await them among the warm-hearted folk of the North Isles, Britain’s remotest islands. Lachlan (described by one reviewer of his first book “A Kangaroo Loose in the Top Paddock” as ‘an Australian James Herriot) once again finds himself caught up in the lives of his parishioners as well as their four-footed companions. There was Angel, the ankle-sized dog that managed to savage Lachlan’s ear, Wee Wee the giant pig and his companion Pooh-Bah the cat, and many others. Then there was Muckle Malcolm and the mysterious encounter with a mythical trow, and the eccentric Lucy McNere who had her father photographed in a most unusual location, and Doreen the plump femme fatale, and many others, as well as all the gracious folk of the parish of the North Isles who filled Lachlan’s and Janet’s lives with warm and unforgettable memories.
