Populus deltoides, commonly known as the Eastern Cottonwood, is a fast-growing deciduous tree widely admired for its tall, stately form and broad, heart-shaped leaves. Native to North America, it is one of the largest hardwood trees in the continent, capable of reaching up to 25–35 meters (80–115 feet) in height under ideal conditions.
The leaves of Populus deltoides are bright green with a silvery underside, shimmering beautifully in the breeze. During spring, the tree produces catkins (slender flowering spikes) followed by fluffy white cotton-like seeds, which give it the name Cottonwood.
This robust tree grows best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, thriving near rivers, canals, and open plains. Known for its rapid growth and excellent shade, it’s often planted for farm boundaries, windbreaks, timber production, and landscaping.
Its strong adaptability and elegant appearance make Populus deltoides a preferred choice for reforestation and ornamental planting
