The original silk creation from the 1770s exemplifies the exceptional skill and creativity of the silk producers in Spitalfields, East London, which long stood as the epicentre for fashionable, high-quality silks. By selecting just one element of the beautifully patterned fabric and opening up the repeat of the design, a simple, elegant striped wallcovering was created. The small, delicate stiches are slightly raised to mimic the texture of the brocaded silk original and a soft linen texture print was added to the background to further enhance the fabric effect, again in reference to the pattern’s textile origin.
