Join this year's RIBA Royal Gold Medallist as he reflects on an extraordinary career devoted to the cause of housing

Neave Brown has recently been awarded the 2017 RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to the field of public housing. In this very special evening at Hackney Empire, Neave will reflect on his carrer and the lessons that the programme of post-war reconstruction offers to today's generation of housebuilders.  Born in Ithica in 1929, Neave relocated to England after the second world war and went on to study at the Architectural Association between 1950 and 1955, where his contemporaries included Kenneth Frampton and Patrick Hodgkinson. His 1965 terrace of five houses at Winscombe Street represented the first of three housing projects that he would realise in the London Borough of Camden, each of which now enjoys protection through listing.

Neave will be joined on stage by Mark Swenarton, the author of Cook’s Camden: The Making of Modern Housing (Lund Humphries), the first comprehensive study of the housing built by the London Borough of Camden during the years when Sydney Cook was borough architect. Principal among the products of this era were Neave Brown’s estates at Dunboyne Road (1977) and Alexandra Road (1978), which today are recognised as two of the most innovative urban housing schemes built in Britain in the past 100 years. The evening will feature reflections on Neave’s work from invited guests including the architect, Farshid Moussavi.
