  • Other Names: Asian Bleeding Heart, Lyre Flower, Lady-in-a-Bath
  • Seed Type: Perennial
  • Sow Indoors or Outdoors: Bleeding Heart is recommended to begin indoors 12 – 14 weeks prior to the frost because dicentra seeds are perennials that require 56 – 70 days to germinate with full lighting. Dicentra spectabilis, or more commonly known as Bleeding Heart, is a unique flowering member of the dicentra family Papaveraceae and native to the shaded and temperate regions of Siberia, China, Korea, and Japan. Bleeding Heart’s taxonomical classification was recently changed from Dicentra spectabilis to Lamprocapnos spectabilis, but is still widely referred to and sold by its former name. The first specimens were introduced to the west by 19th century Scottish botanist Robert Fortune.
