This very early settlers' Newspaper was produced by G. W. Woon during the first Taranaki war. During this war colonial troops fought against the Indigenous Māori in an attempt to obtain more lands for the expanding colony. The war ended in a truce, but would lead to further conflicts and eventual land confiscation with further wars.
The satirical paper was named after the London publication - "punch". It poked fun at the war and colonial policies of the time with cartoons and humorous poems.
