Gypsophila seeds have a wildflower-like hardiness and are most popularly sown outdoors directly after the frost. Deep Rose Gypsy Series grows so vigorously that there is little reason to begin indoors, but for earliest blooms, begin seeds 4 – 6 weeks prior and harden off to a sunny place in the garden or planter. Germination will take 7 – 21 days with full lighting. Lightly press 5 – 6 Deep Rose gypsophila seeds 14” apart into average, medium dry, and well-drained soil in full darkness. Baby’s Breath is also commonly broadcasted directly like a wildflower and evenly raked and tamped into the soil. Deep Rose gypsophila is a hardy full sun performer known to be very low-maintenance and tolerant to heat and drought. Do not overwater because gypsophila thrives in dry soils and can be susceptible to botrytis, aster yellows, and mold caused by saturation if not properly drained. Gypsophila has no serious insects or pests. Deep Rose gypsophila seeds mature in 56 – 63 days as 8 – 10” tall mounded shrubs with a 10 – 14” spread of ½” rose, pink, and magenta blooms.
Deep Rose Gypsy Series debuted as a 2004 All-America Selections Bedding Plant Winner and noted by AAS judges as “producing a higher number of blooms over a longer flowering season” and “easily grown from seed and requires little maintenance.” Gypsophila muralis, or more commonly known as Baby’s Breath, is native to central and eastern Europe but has since naturalized throughout much of the world.
