The Cricket on the Hearth is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1845 as part of his series of Christmas books. The "cricket" in the title is a literal insect, whose cheerful chirping on the hearth (a symbol of the home) is believed to bring good luck and happiness to the household.
