I am bowled over by the deep spirituality. Edvin Fischer's Beethoven is back in high sound quality. It is still a bitter regret that Edwin Fischer, who is an authority on Beethoven, did not leave a recording of his complete piano sonatas. There are many reasons for this, but one of them is that Schnabel's recordings were ahead of his own, and Fischer himself was aware of his broken arm and became cautious about recording. This live performance was recorded after the war, so it has some technical dangers, but this matches with Beethoven's vacillation and wavering, creating a terrific atmosphere as if he had truly assimilated with Beethoven. The high level of "spirituality" is unparalleled, and Szigeti's approach, which is similar to the approach he took in his later years, is superb. Especially in Beethoven's later works, No. 30 and No. 32, the nobility of the performance is overwhelming. The sound quality has been enhanced by a new remastering that goes back to the original master, and the UHQCD version adds even more brilliance.
